Identity theft

On November 9, a security breach was made to the Vancouver School District data system.  The breach compromised personal information of all employees (regular and substitute) including their names, social security numbers, birth dates, and their financial institutions and account numbers (for those who use direct deposit).

The district has notified banks and credit unions.  But with a breach like this, problems may occur.  It would be prudent for each employee to notify one or all of the credit reporting agencies to request a fraud alert for identity theft.  This would be a 90-day precautionary measure.

     — Experian  1-800-397-3742

     — TransUnion  1-800-680-7289

When she was informed of the security breach, VEA’s president, Ann Giles, quickly went into action mode, contacting the Washington Education Association and the National Education Association for advice and assistance for our members and all VSD employees.  NEA’s Member Benefits quickly put together a proposal for the district that would make all VSD employees’ financial and personal information whole for up to three years, with an optional package available for individuals.

The VEA Executive Board met on November 10 and passed a resolution urging the Vancouver School District to do the right thing by taking advantage of NEA’s proposal.
